ITB Welcome Senators

ITB Welcome Senator David Norris and David Coleman for Humanities Week 2013

ITB are delighted to announce that this year’s annual Humanities Week will take place from Tuesday 12th to Thursday 14th March. The festivities will launch with a fantastically colourful and vibrant parade that starts at 10.30 on Tuesday and will make its way throughout the college. With over 80 students from the ECCE and Social and Community Development students and staff from the Humanities Department taking part it promises to be a parade to remember.

A number of exciting events are planned to take place over the three days including;

  • Tuesday - the aforementioned parade
  • Tuesday – 11 am Key Note Speaker Senator David Norris will speak about Diversity in Lecture Theatre 1. This will be ticketed to so as not to exceed capacity.
  • Tuesday - 12 noon there will be an interesting debate on “ITB Embraces Diversity” from the Debating Society and Social Care Students (LT1)
  • Wednesday – 3pm Gareth Mullan from Show Racism the Red Card to speak.
  • Thursday 10.30 am David Coleman will present ‘Communicating Effectively with Children of All Ages’ (LT1)
  • Wednesday – 10 am & 12.30 there will be workshops with the Blanchardstown Traveller Development Group (A57)

Dr Celesta McCann James Head of Department, ITB said of ITB Humanities Week, “It is wonderful to see the wide variety of activities on campus to celebrate Humanities. This annual event has captured the imagination of both staff and students at ITB and is a marvellous opportunity to showcase their work in imaginative and creative ways. The exciting guests we have at ITB this week add an extra dimension to the proceedings”.

Other events will include;

  • Travellers and Education By Victoria King
  • Seminars from Voluntary Organisations: Oznam House, Muscular Dystrophy Ireland, Blanchardstown Youth Partnership, National Advocacy Service for People with Disabilities
  • Workshops by Grainne McKenna of Fingal County Childcare Committee, Sean Redmond of the Garda Youth Division, Niall Coughlan on “Thinking Outside the Box
  • Exhibitions - “Capturing Society: A Sociological Perspective” &  “Human Rights”
  • Showcases of work - Child Safety Brochures, by Early childhood Care and Education students. An Intervention competition with Social Care Students. Early Childhood Care and Education Students placement activities. Social Care students’ video competition

There will also be display stands and workshops on campus every day, student competitions and loads more for everyone’s enjoyment.

The Department of Humanities at ITB run both full and part time courses in Applied Social Studies, Social and Community Development and Early Childhood Education.
