ITB - Putting Exercise First For 55+ Local Residents This spring!
Today, The Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) and Fingal County Council are ensuring that the ladies and gentlemen of the greater Dublin area get fit this spring by inviting them to to participate in a “Stay Strong Strategy” which happens today.
Men and women in the Fingal area were given the opportunity to join their local community for an outdoor exercise session in the following parks; Millennium Regional (Blanchardstown); Malahide Castle Regional and The Red Arches (Baldoyle). Aimed towards 55+ year olds, the aerobic and resistance exercise session was for all fitness levels and body types as research has proven that a regular exercise programme provides significant health advantages. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.5 billion adults worldwide are overweight with a host of life-destroying ailments including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer which can accompany obesity. Regular exercise and healthy food are the best ammunition in the fight against preventable disease.
So to encourage maximum participation the age friendly exercise session was completely free.
Sinead White Final Degree Year Student, Sports Management and Coaching Programme, ITB said of the initiative, “We tried to make it easy for participants to start with small steps and just to dream big. It was an open invitation to all to become comfortable with the outdoor gymnasium workout before making a long-term change for the better. Exercise can be more than just about getting active; it can be about becoming more sociable and making new friends.”
Julie O’Connell, Final Degree Year Student, Sports Management and Coaching Programme, ITB said of the degree course, “The Sports Management and Coaching Degree programme at ITB has helped us develop interpersonal and communications skills in a coaching context, and also provided us with a comprehensive appreciation of and familiarity with the techniques that are required for successful planning, promotion and implementation of sports and leisure events such as this one. It resembles an internship”.
