From the courses’ inauguration in 2009, ITB’s Creative Digital Media course has attracted an impressive cohort of creative, dynamic and talented students who are passionate about digital content. Students combine the best of technology and creative arts skills to allow them to contribute to today's interconnected and switched-on world.
The Head of School of Informatics and Engineering, Mr Larry McNutt, said of the Exhibition, “This academic programme was designed to carve out a new space in the higher education landscape – a “seedbed of creativity” that would allow our learners to explore and celebrate their own personal creative talents. This exhibition clearly demonstrates how the students have risen to this challenge and harnessed the best that digital media can offer.”
The show will feature the wonderful video ‘Tilt-shift Dublin’, that is a student project created by second year students Stephen Duffy, Rafal Baran, Afshin Moosavi and Olivia Ricci. Tilt–shift photography is the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. The aim of ‘Tilt-shift Dublin’ was to video and photograph Dublin and transform it into a toy-like model by using the tilt-shift effect. The viral video which can be seen on www.tiltshiftdublin.com has garnered a lot of interest with the people of Ireland in recent weeks.
Friday, 7th of June will also see the visually artistic display launch of the Little Big Imaginations at ITB where 67 sixth class students from St Patricks Senior National School will showcase their short stories in collaboration with the Creative Digital Media (CDM) Second Year Visual Communications Students from ITB (Institute of Technology Blanch). The project involves the students of St Patricks National School writing a short story in class as part of their normal class work. The children then acted as ‘clients’ and took part in a one to one briefing meeting with a CDM student where their stories would be transformed into inspiring graphics to match their narrations.
Speaking on the collaboration, CDM Lecturer and project coordinator Niamh O’Hora said, “The collaboration has been a wonderful opportunity to draw inspiration from the creative imaginations of these talented young authors. CDM students were motivated by their enthusiastic clients along with the prospect of creating a completed product dependent on collective contributions.”
“The idea to collaborate through an innovative assessment was encouraged by the work of the ITB Access Officer and the ‘Time to Read initiative, which aims to promote reading and literacy among school children. The result of this project is an illustrative book called ‘Little Big Imagination’ which contains all the children’s stories with graphics to match. All the children and their parents are invited to the Launch Day and will receive a copy of the book as a memento of their work and of their primary school years which they can cherish in years to come.”
In addition to this, ITB students with heavily weighed practical assessment on the CDM course were able to further develop existing research and design assets in multiple modules throughout second year. In the Website Design Module, the same stories of these young creative minds were translated into narratives. These wonderful stories and graphics are available to view along with the original publication at www.creativedigitalmedia.ie/littlebigimagonation
